Completed Modernization Works on the Vinkovci-Vukovar Railway
In December, the Republic of Croatia marked the official completion of works on the upgrade and electrification of the Vinkovci-Vukovar railway. This €61 million project was co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund.
The railway, nearly 19 kilometers in length and designed for speeds of up to 120 km/h, connects the river port of Vukovar on the Danube with the rest of Croatia’s railway network, particularly with Corridor RH1, which runs from the state border with Slovenia to state border with Serbia. This corridor is a key section of the Alpine-Western Balkan Rail Freight Corridor.
Ivan Kršić, President of the Management Board of HŽ Infrastructure, announced significant investments in the renewal of the railway network:
“In the next decade, we plan to invest nearly €6 billion in the reconstruction and modernization of the railway infrastructure, thereby fully renewing and modernizing nearly 1,000 kilometers of track. This is the largest investment cycle in railway infrastructure in the history of the Republic of Croatia,” Kršić stated.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport, and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, additionally emphasized investments in fleet renewal:
“From European funds, 21 trains have been purchased, and two new battery-powered trains are also on their way. So, alongside infrastructure development, we are also conducting a major procurement cycle for new trains.”
