Tragedy at the train station in Novi Sad

On Friday, November 1, 2024, in a tragic event at the Novi Sad Railway Station, 14 people were killed and 3 people were seriously injured, when the canopy at the entrance to the recently reconstructed building of the Railway Station collapsed and fell on people who were found below.

The works on the reconstruction of the Novi Sad Railway Station were carried out in the period 2022-2024, and the reconstructed station building was opened in July 2024.

On that occasion, the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure said that 65 million euros were invested in the reconstruction of the Novi Sad Railway Station, of which 16 million euros were invested in the reconstruction of the building itself.

The contractor for the reconstruction of the station was the Chinese consortium CRIC & CCCC (China Railway International Co. Ltd and “China Communications Construction Company Ltd”).

The Railway Station building in Novi Sad was built in 1964 according to the project of architect Imre Farkaš.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia announced an investigation into this tragedy, and Serbia declared a one-day mourning for the victims.
